Female creatives get FAME boost
Women DJ duo Lois 'DJ Lava' Morgan, and fellow co-founder of Head BopHerz Ent, Tandra 'DJ Lytes' Jhagroo, are among a handpicked cohort of creative entrepreneurs selected to benefit under the Kingston Creative FAME (Film, Animation, Music & Entertainment) Incubator programme.
The initiative, supported by the Development Bank of Jamaica, through its Boosting Innovation, Growth and Entrepreneurship Ecosystems (BIGEE) project, aims to give female creatives access to capital and new markets across some of the fastest-growing subsectors of the creative industries.
Christopher Brown, programme manager of the BIGEE project, explained, "FAME helps unlock the economic value of Jamaica's creative talent and supports viable pathways for business to innovate and grow."
Over a 12-week period, participants will undergo intensive business training, coaching, mentorship, and market-access activities. The programme will culminate in an entrepreneur 'Demo Day' during the Artwalk Festival on Sunday, September 28, where the cohort will present their ventures to the public.
Andrea Dempster Chung, co-founder and executive director of Kingston Creative, stressed that FAME is more than just a business incubator.
"It's a movement to ensure that women have equal opportunity to shape the future of Jamaica's creative economy," she said.
"Our goal is that participants don't just leave with better ideas, but with new customers, good business partners, and a clear road map for growth," Dempster Chung added.
Joining Morgan and Jhagroo in this year's programme are creative director Alicia Walker; Erica Louise 'Rica G' Richards and Jody 'Drummy Jo' Brown, co-founders of Well Ample Productions; Alisha Thorpe, founder of My Model University; Crystal Evans, founder of Crystal Evans S Book House; Kacy Garvey, co-founder of JAIKU Limited; Dennise Williams, founder of Financially Focused; Arianna Lawrence, founder of Ari Connects; Adriene 'Rayven Amani' Higgins, founder of Jorja Events Media; and Jada Powell, founder of Panache Consulting.
