Scott ‘mentally ready’ - Jamaican triple jumper ready to do his best in first World Champs final
TOKYO, Japan:
Despite entering the Tokyo World Athletics Championships a heavy favourites to finish on the podium, Jamaica's Jordan Scott said his only focus will be on performing at his best in Friday's final.
Scott was comfortable in qualifying yesterday, advancing as an automatic qualifier, with a best effort of 17.19 metres.
The reigning national champion would need two jumps to advance, as his opening distance of 17.00m was not enough, for the automatic qualifying mark of 17.10m.
Scott explained he had opened his series much too reserved, as he focused too much on registering a legal attempt.
"It was always to go out there and get it done on the first jump. Unfortunately, you know, I was a little bit too relaxed, just trying to get in a safe jump," he explained.
"But we were able to put it together on the second attempt and get the the qualification out of the way."
Although pleased with not having to use all three of his attempts to advance, Scott said it would have been ideal to hit the standard on his first jump.
He explained that less effort in qualification means more time to rest ahead of the final, and shared that he is in good shape.
"I'm feeling good, feeling healthy so I'm just looking forward to Friday," Scott said.
"The sooner you get it done, you know, the faster you can get around the back and get ready, recover and be ready to go for the next day.
"So I think getting it done on two was good, but not ideal, as I said, it would have been great to get it done on one," he explained.
FIRST FINAL
No stranger to the World Championships, having competed in 2019 and 2022, this will be Scott's first time advancing to the final.
He enters as the third ranked athlete in the world, but said he will not be distracted by the weight of expectations.
For Scott, his only goal will be to perform at his very best, and accept whatever comes from it.
"Believe it or not, this is my first final at any championship I've ever been to," he said. "So I think mentally I'm ready. I've proved physically that I've been ready this season and it's just to go out there and put it together on Friday.
"I'm just going out there to do my best. If I go out there and jump my best and somebody jumps further on me, so be it, but I just want to go out there and do my best."
